Over the past several years, the GEL-Nimbus® series from ASICS has established itself as the clear leader among performance cushioning shoes, with several factors contributing to its success.  The first is unmistakably the shoe’s unparalleled cushioning coupled with a broad, stable, and flexible base of support.  Combined with these essentials are fantastic upper comfort, great fit, and excellent durability.  There is an additional element, however, that’s often overlooked: Each update stretches to achieve something new in a manner that blends technology with cutting-edge design.  The goal is to add unexpected new elements that nevertheless deliver the platform feel and fit that GEL-Nimbus® fans demand.  This consistent push for performance and originality is what truly gives the series its edge.  With the GEL Nimbus® 10, ASICS aims to continue along the same innovative path, with additions that enhance the ride, fit and overall comfort.  

Changes and Updates for the Asics Nimbus 10

The tooling on the GEL-Nimbus® 10 features Solyte® midsole material with a re-worked composition.  The improved Solyte® provides a plush ride, better ‘bounce-back’ response from the road, and resists compression more effectively.  The rear-foot construction - reminiscent of the discreet tooling of the GEL-Kinsei™, - is a bit more decoupled than the previous version and features larger silicon gel units for exceptional cushioning at heel strike.  For enhanced stability, the platform is a fragment wider than the previous version.  To ensure midfoot support, the ridges on the Space Trusstic® unit are more aggressive, particularly on the medial side.  This creates more torsional rigidity and contributes to a smoother transition to propulsion.  (Note: the women’s version features Gender Fit Space Trusstic® for customized support.)   Finally, the forefoot of the Asics Nimbus will be more flexible, thanks to a four-piece outsole construction. 

The changes extend to the upper as well, with an exciting new construction designed to match the unparalleled platform comfort of the midsole/outsole.  Originating from a development concept to improve on the ASICS’ Biomorphic Fit System™, we have added a unique set-up that we call the ‘Asymmetrical Lacing Design’ to the Asics Nimbus.  The function of this new lacing system is to align the medial and lateral quarter-panels evenly on either side of the bony topline of the foot.  The resulting lace line effectively angles from the top of the instep toward the big toe.  With the tongue placed in-between the side panels and along the same 'fall line', the entire lacing section becomes part of the biomorphic story. The benefit is an upper that moves more efficiently with the foot, minimizing the potential for irritation. 

Road Test of the Asics Nimbus 10

The ride of the GEL-Nimbus® 10 will be similar to that of the GEL-Nimbus® 9 in terms of platform comfort and flexibility.  Runners who like to feel a bit more medial support through the midfoot will notice the extra torsional rigidity.  This is a result of the more aggressive ridges on the Space Trusstic® unit. The upper fit is similar to the current model in that it provides a snug heel fit and allows for a roomy forefoot environment.  The addition of the new asymmetrical design will reduce the potential for irritation for those high-volume foot types.
