The Asics Cumulus® 11 series has long been a favorite of runners who appreciate a pillow- soft trainer at an affordable price. With its broad, stable platform, the shoe has also maintained a loyal following from those who require a bit more support. In fall 2008, the series took a big step forward by adding higher-end IGS® components. This strategy worked brilliantly, as runners embraced the shoe with renewed enthusiasm. In fact, the Asics GEL-Cumulus® 10 became the series’ all-time best seller. The 2009 version, the GEL-Cumulus® 11, will continue the momentum with some new fit features, and a few make-sense ‘tweaks’ to that will be sure to satisfy fans of the shoe.
Changes and Updates
The GEL-Cumulus® 10 showcased exciting new IGS® components like Gender Specific Space Trusstic System® and a discreet GEL® Cushioning System in the Rearfoot. Accordingly, the primary goal for the new Asics Cumulus 11was to refine the elements that made the previous version so popular, along with a few added refinements. So for starters, the discreet heel image from the previous version will become even more decoupled to give the rear-foot greater shock attenuating qualities. The Solyte® midsole carries over the same 24/14mm height that ASICS cushioning category is known for, but is spec’d down just a bit for a softer platform feel. The softer midsole also contributes to a quarter ounce (7grams) drop in weight, which takes the shoe down to only 11.4 oz (325 grams) The Gender Specific Space Trusstic System® returns as well to maintain midfoot stability. Coupled with the broad base nets of the shoe, the tooling will continue to offer exceptional stability.
The iconic open vamp construction of the GEL-Cumulus® 11 series returns on the update, but the remainder of the upper gets an interesting and unique new technical element in the form of a kimono tongue construction. A kimono set-up simply means that the tongue opens to one side. In the case of the GEL-Cumulus® 11, the tongue is attached to the lateral side about half way down, while the medial side has a normal entry. The design is intended for under-pronators, as the construction wraps the instep more snugly on the lateral side, helping to keep the foot balanced on the platform. To further support the lateral side, memory foam has been inserted in the lining material of the quarterpanel. This is the same memory foam material employed by Personal Heel Fit (PHF®)in the heel lining. The result is a supportive fit and a comfortable fitting environment that conforms to the shape of the foot. Ease of entry is not compromised; in fact, most will probably not notice the difference.
Another important update focused on the heel geometry, which has been adjusted so that the angle of the heel tab is more vertical compared to the heel tab of the GEL-Cumulus 10. Coupled with stitch-less PHF construction, this will help eliminate any issues for those that experienced heel irritation on the previous model.
In a Nutshell
The GEL-Cumulus® 11 will feature a more decoupled heel environment for improved shock attenuation at heel strike. The new, lightweight Solyte® midsole also provides a softer platform and drops weight down to a performance-oriented 11.4 oz. (325 grams) The tooling offers a broad base of support and makes the shoe a good product solution for mild over-pronators that prefer a cushioned ride. The upper features a new kimono tongue construction coupled with lateral memory foam for a snug comfortable fit. Also noteworthy is the heel tab, with new geometry to lessen the potential for irritation.
Road Test
The road feel of the Asics Cumulus 11 is a bit softer than previous models, and the lighter weight gives it an improved performance ride. The platform feels exceptionally stable for a cushioning shoe. The upper remains true to the iconic unstructured GEL-Cumulus® 11 vamp construction for an open toe environment. Also, the new kimono tongue construction will provide a supportive fit on the lateral side, taking the overall fit of the shoe to a new level of comfort.
