When the first GEL-Nimbus® came to market in the fall of 1999, the initial concept was to provide the ultimate cushioned platform. That notion has remained intact, but as the series evolved and began to attract a large following, it became clear that the story wasn’t just about cushioning. In fact, many mild over-pronators chose the shoe because it provided a surprising amount of stability. Others enjoyed the glove-like upper fit that was first introduced on the GEL-Nimbus® 6. Today the series is the sum of all these factors, and enjoys an enviable status as the industry’s best-selling flagship cushioning shoe. The Asics GEL-Nimbus® 11 will continue in the same direction, with a focus on improving the performance qualities of the shoe.
Changes and Updates
The central theme for the Asics GEL- Nimbus® 11 probably could be summed up by the phrase
“Addition by subtraction”. This may sound a little strange, but it’s important to understand that the key concept for the shoe was to improve performance. To accomplish this goal, it made sense to remove extraneous elements from the previous model. A good example of this strategy is illustrated by the re-engineered Asymmetrical Lacing Design, which removed all overlays across the toe-box of the Asics Nimbus. The new construction creates the open toe environment similar to what was used on the GEL-Nimbus® 9.
For improved comfort and breathability, the synthetic material that made up most of the upper on the GEL-Nimbus® 10 was removed and replaced with an open mesh environment. Additionally, the standard 4mm foam lining material inside the tongue was removed and replaced with 5mm memory foam. This will allow a more form-fitted feel under the laces. Also, to lessen the potential for irritation in the heel area, the stitching was removed around the memory foam that makes up PHF® (Personal Heel Fit) and updated to a stitch-less construction.
Probably the most impactful subtraction from the previous version however, (and the biggest overall performance update) can by summed up by one word: weight. The previous version weighed 13.2 ounces (373 grams) The GEL-Nimbus® 11 will be dramatically lighter, hitting the scales at a remarkable 12.4 oz (350 grams) The weight savings was aided by the removal of the extraneous synthetic material mentioned above, but also by a change to the midsole construction.
The midsole construction and the accompanying weight savings form the central technical update to this newest version of the Asics Nimbus. This was achieved with the addition of an injected Solyte® cap over the forefoot. The advantage of the injection process is lighter weight and more consistent density in comparison to compression molded EVA. Not only does this help drop the weight of the tooling, the ‘dialed-in’ density improves the forefoot road feel. The density of the injected cap also recognizes the higher compression rate on men’s shoes versus women’s. So in an expansion of ASICS’ Gender Comfort strategy, the injected section is softer on women’s than on the men’s model. (Men’s is 53 degrees vs 49 degrees on women’s) In addition, the injected portion on the women’s model extends from the lateral side of the forefoot all the way across to the medial side. The men’s starts laterally, but ends just shy of the medial side.
In a Nutshell
The Asics Nimbus 11 will be perhaps the most performance oriented Asics Nimbus ever. This update features an injected Solyte ®cap over the forefoot, which is softer on the women’s model. All extraneous upper overlays have been removed as well for additional comfort and breathability. Coupled with a lighter midsole, the new shoe features a dramatic drop in weight from the previous version, down to a very respectable 12.4 oz. (350 grams) Comfort features have also been added with a memory foam tongue construction and a stitch-less heel environment.
Road Test
This new Asics Nimbus will be the most comfortable and performance-oriented version to date. The midsole will have a soft road feel, and includes the ‘bounce back’ in the platform required for a more responsive ride. The injected Solyte® cap over the forefoot will create a plusher feel than the previous model. Upper fit should be dramatically more breathable with much more open mesh than before, and the relative lack of overlays will result in less potential for irritation and provide a glove-like fit.
