Since the introduction of the first model in 1993, the GEL-Kayano® has enjoyed benchmark status among high-end performance running shoes. This well-deserved reputation was achieved primarily through the careful maintenance of the series’ iconic ride characteristics in conjunction with the steady integration of cutting edge technical components. The same strategy continues in spring 2009 with the introduction of the GEL-Kayano®, which will carry on the consistent evolution of the series with some surprises that will excite fans of the shoe.
What’s New with the Asics Kayano?
The first thing revealed by a run in the GEL-Kayano® is the lighter platform. At 12.8 oz., almost an entire ounce has been shaved from the previous version, primarily the result of improved Solyte® midsole material. The rear-foot features the largest heel GEL® Cushioning System yet used on the series for improved shock attenuation, while shearing forces are addressed by a more aggressively decoupled heel environment. As with the previous version, heel stability is maintained by the TPU plate placed directly over the silicone gel unit. The forefoot tooling of the Asics Kayano features a new injected Solyte® cap placed directly over the forefoot GEL® Cushioning System. The advantage to injected Solyte® is a much more consistent density, ensuring that the desired softness is more ‘dialed in’ than standard compression molded midsole material. Injected Solyte® is also lighter than standard Solyte® contributing to the overall drop in weight.
The upper of the GEL-Kayano® features Asymmetrical Lacing Design for the first time. This set-up represents the evolution of ASICS Biomorphic Fit by creating a more anatomically correct lacing pattern. On the GEL-Kayano®, the Asymmetrical Lacing Design is configured to wrap across the top of the vamp, creating a more open forefoot environment. The net effect is greater comfort and less potential for irritation. To complement the upper changes, Spacemaster mesh has been added to the tongue, promoting more effective moisture transfer and breathability.
Road Test of the Kayano
While the road feel of the GEL-Kayano® is still relatively firm compared to a cushioning shoe, it will feel softer than previously, primarily due to the platform’s lighter weight and the forefoot injected Solyte®. Midfoot stability will feel enhanced as well. Upper fit will be unchanged in the heel, while the Asymmetrical Lacing Design will create a slightly more ample forefoot fit than the previous model.
